Obadiah Mailafia was born on the 24th of December, 1956, in the town of Randa in the Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State. His father’s name is Baba Mailafia Gambo Galadima, He was an evangelist for the Evangelical Reformed Church of Central Nigeria (ERCC). Obadiah Mailafia was raised as an missionary in a multiracial family. His parents later relocated their family to Murya, Lafia, in Nasarawa State , where he was raised. Obadiah Mailafia then went on into the United Kingdom as a Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) scholar from Oriel College , earning a DPhil from the University of Oxford in 1995.

Obadiah Mailafia started his career in the field of teaching Economics and Government in the Akoko Anglican Grammar School, Arigidi-Ikare in the Ondo State in Nigeria between 1978 between 1978 and 1979 as his main assignment during his mandatory National Youth Service Corps year. Following his national service, he returned to his alma mater, Ahmadu Bello University, as a graduate assistant at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences between 1980 and 1982. In this time, Obadiah taught undergraduates, and also served as research assistant to Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, who later was the Minister of Foreign Affairs and later United Nations adviser for Political Affairs. Mailafia also served as the primary liaison to the European Investment Bank (EIB) in the management of EUR5 billion intra-ACP resources fund that is being administered by EIB,
comprised of including the Africa Infrastructure Fund and the ACP-EIB Investment Facility. He also served as the chairperson of the ACP Strategic Management Group and the draftsman for the Secretariat’s Strategic Plan, Renewal and Transformation (2011-2014).
